Methodology
Osmometer—Freezing Point Depression
Note: For in-house patients only. If a provider requests an osmolal gap, order test #LAB1123 Osmolality, Serum or Plasma, and comment that an osmolal gap be performed also. A dark-green top (lithium heparin) tube of whole blood must be drawn in addition to the serum tube.
Specimen Requirements
If serum osmolality is being performed in conjunction with urine osmolality, draw serum within 4 hours of urine collection.
Submit only 1 of the following specimens:
Preferred:
Specimen Type: Serum
Container/Tube: Serum gel
Specimen Volume: 1 mL
Specimen Minimum Volume: 0.3 mL
Additional Information: Label specimen appropriately (serum).
