Methodology
Glycerol Phosphate Oxidase
Specimen Requirements
Patients should not eat or drink for 10 hours before the test is performed (small amounts of water or decaffeinated, sugar-free beverages are ok). Patients should not consume alcohol the evening before testing. Diabetic patients should consult their physicians about when to schedule snacks.
Submit only 1 of the following specimens:
Preferred:
Specimen Type: Plasma
Container/Tube: Light-green top (lithium heparin gel)
Specimen Volume: 1 mL
Specimen Minimum Volume: 0.5 mL
Collection Instructions:
1. Draw specimen following an overnight (10 hour) fast.
2. Spin down and separate plasma from cells within 2 hours of draw.
3. If plunger filters are used, immediate removal of plasma is indicated unless an air gap can be created between the device and specimen.
Additional Information:
1. Do not ultracentrifuge specimen.
2. Avoid repeated freeze/thaw cycles.
3. Label specimen appropriately (plasma).

Reference Values
The National Lipid Association and the National Cholesterol Education Program (NCEP) have set the following guidelines for lipids (total cholesterol, triglycerides, high-density lipoprotein [HDL] cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein [LDL], and non-HDL cholesterol) in adults 18 years old and older:
Optimal: <175 mg/dL
Borderline High: 175-199 mg/dL
High: 200-499 mg/dL
Very High: ≥ 500 mg/dL
The Expert Panel on Intergrated Guidelines for Cardiovascular Health and Risk Reduction in Children and Adolescents has set the following guidelines for lipids (total cholesterol, triglycerides, high-density lipoprotein [HDL] cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein [LDL], and non-HDL cholesterol) in children up to the age of 17:
0-9 Years:
Optimal: <75 mg/dL
Borderline High: 75-99 mg/dL
High: ≥ 100 mg/dL
10-17 Years:
Optimal: <90 mg/dL
Borderline High: 90-129 mg/dL
High: ≥ 130 mg/dL
