Methodology
Liquid Chromatography/Tandem Mass Spectrometry (LC-MS/MS)
Specimen Requirements
Submit only 1 of the following specimens:
Preferred:
Specimen Type: EDTA whole blood
Container/Tube: Lavender top (EDTA)
Specimen Volume: 2 mL
Specimen Minimum Volume: 0.4 mL
Collection Instructions:
1. Send specimen in original tube.
2. Do not centrifuge.
Additional Information: For therapeutic monitoring, specimen is usually drawn just prior to next dose (up to 1/2 hour). If toxicity is suspected, draw level when ordered (STAT).
Alternate:
Specimen Type: Lithium or sodium heparin whole blood
Container/Tube: Dark-green top (lithium or sodium heparin)
Specimen Volume: 2 mL
Specimen Minimum Volume: 1.2 mL
Collection Instructions:
1. Send specimen in original tube.
2. Do not centrifuge.
3. Gel tube is not acceptable.
