Methodology
Direct Smears are Stained and the Eosinophils are Estimated as a Percentage of the White Blood Cells Present
Specimen Requirements
Specimen Type: Nasal discharge or sputum
Container/Tube: Glass slide
Specimen Volume: Slide
Collection Instructions:
1. Label frosted end of slide in pencil with patient’s name (first and last), date and actual time of collection, and type of specimen.
2. Collect nasal discharge or sputum using a sterile swab or wax paper.
3. Immediately after collection, spread a moderately heavy layer of cells on a clean, glass microscope slide.
4. Allow slides to air dry.
Additional Information:
1. If specimens are taken separately for each side of the nose, the slides must be labeled as such.
2. Specimen source is required.
