Useful For/Utility
Aids in the diagnosis of infectious vaginitis caused by bacterial vaginosis bacteria (40-50%), yeast (20-25%), and Trichomonas vaginalis (15-20%), although the sensitivity is only 50-75%.
Methodology
Microscopic Examination
Clinical Information
Vaginal discharge is one of the most common women's healthcare problem. 90% of the infectious vaginitis is caused by bacterial vaginosis bacteria (40-50%), yeast (20-25%), and Trichomonas vaginalis (15-20%). Mixed infections are found in up to 25% of patients with infectious vaginitis. Due to the significant low sensitivity of the Wet prep, in order to prevent misdiagnosing or recurrent office visits, the Vaginitis panel (Candida species, Gardnerella Vaginalis, and Trichomonas vaginalis) DNA Probe, LABVAGPR, is recommended.

Whenever possible, culture specimens should be obtained before antibiotics or antimicrobial agents have been administered.
Specimen must arrive within 1 hour of collection.

Semiquantitative reporting on: bacteria, clue cells, PMNs, squamous cells, Trichomonas, and yeast.
Additional Information
To diagnose Bacterial vaginosis (BV), routine bacterial cultures are not helpful, and traditional Wet prep testing has a significant decrease in sensitivity. Vaginitis is caused by BV, Trichomonas vaginalis or an overgrowth of yeasts, typically Candida albicans. The Vaginitis Panel (Candida species, Gardnerella Vaginalis, and Trichomonas vaginalis) DNA Probe, (LABVAGPR) is recommended.
