Useful For/Utility

Identifying yeast in esophageal specimens.

Clinical Information

Candidiasis is an infection caused by a yeast called Candida. Candida normally lives on the skin and inside the body, in places such as mouth, throat, gut and vagina without causing problems. Sometimes, Candida can multiply and cause an infection if the environment inside the mouth, throat, or esophagus changes in a way that encourages fungal growth.  Healthcare providers usually diagnose candidiasis in the esophagus by doing an endoscopy. An endoscopy allows the healthcare provider to examine the extent of the intention and to biopsy tissues that can then be cultured in the lab.

Specimen Requirements

Whenever possible, culture specimens should be obtained before antibiotics or antimicrobial agents have been administered.

Specimen Type: Esophagus

Container/Tube: Microscope slide

Collection Instructions:

1. Collect sample from the esophagus and place some of the sample directly onto a clean, labeled microscope slide. Slides may be submitted to the laboratory in a closed slide holder. Slides may be submitted in a petri dish if specimen is then walked to the laboratory as it cannot be sent via the pneumatic tube system.

Additional Information:
