Useful For/Utility

Bone marrow aspiration and biospy.  Useful for detecting suspected underlying hematological disorders based on clinical and/or laboratory data.  Bone Marow can also be used in staging of lymphoma and identifying metastases on non-hematologic malignancies.

Methodology

Includes differential, interpretative report, and iron stain.

For additional tests, extra specimen is required.

Clinical Information

Bone marrow specimens are evaluated and interpreted by a pathologist.  Routine examination includes a differetnial, iron stain, and interpretative report.  Cytogenetic and molecular studies are reported as an addedum to the routine bone marrow examination. Flow cytometry results are reported separately. 

Specimen Requirements

For SMDC, Miller Dwan, and Duluth Clinic Main patients, this test must be scheduled in advance. Call  Special Hematology at 218-786-4514 Extension 13502 to schedule.

 

Hematologist will bring all necessary equipment to the examination room and order the appropriate test(s).

 

Specimen Type: Biopsy

Container/Tube: Sterile container

Specimen Volume: Slide

Collection Instructions:

1. Make several imprint slides. If biopsy is bloody, drain on gauze before making imprints.

2. Place biopsy into B+ fixative or 10% buffered formalin container.

Additional Information:

1. Label container with patient’s name (first and last), date and actual time of collection, and specimen source.

2. Include peripheral blood smear and counts, if available.

3. Specimen source/site, clinical indication for bone marrow, and test(s) desired are required.

Container/Tube: Sterile container and lavender top (EDTA), a yellow top (ACD), or a green top (heparin)

Specimen Volume: Slide and aspirate

Collection Instructions:

1. Aspirate is collected by physician.

2. Using a pencil, label frosted end of slides with patient’s name (first and last), date and actual time of collection, and specimen source.

3. Aspirate bone marrow and make 4 to 6 direct smears from aspirate.

4. Place remaining aspirate in tube. Mix 8 to 10 times to facilitate mixing and prevent clotting.

Specimen Requirements Additional Information

If bone marrow is being collected off-site and will be transported by courier to SMDC Main Laboratory, place biopsy into a separate biohazard bag. Send slides and tube of aspirate in another biohazard bag. Complete the requisition indicating site of aspiration, clinical indication for bone marrow, and tests desired. Send a peripheral blood smear and counts if available.
