Useful For/Utility

The direct antiglobulin test (DAT) is used primarily for the investigation of hemolytic transfusion reactions, hemolytic disease of the fetus and newborn, autoimmune hemolytic anemia, and drug-induced immune hemolysis.

Extended DATs using IgG and C-3 specific antisera may be performed at additional charge if Coombs, Direct is positive
An RBC elution and any necessary antibody ID may be performed at additional charge if indicated.

Clinical Information

The direct antiglobulin test (DAT) can determine if red cells have been coated in vivo with immunoglobulin, complement, or both.

Specimen Requirements

Specimen must arrive within 48 hours of draw (<24 hours preferred).

 

Specimen Type: Whole blood

Container/Tube: Pink top (K2EDTA)-Lavender top (EDTA) is also acceptable.

Specimen Volume: 4-6 mL

Specimen Minimum Volume: 1 mL

Collection Instructions: Send specimen in original tube.
