Test Code LAB81 Cholesterol, LDL, Plasma or Serum
Additional Codes
Test Name in EPIC | EPIC Test Code | Mnemonic |
---|---|---|
LDL CHOLESTEROL | LAB81 | LDL |
Useful For/Utility
Evaluation of cardiovascular risk
Verification of estimated low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) in patients with hypertriglyceridemia or extremely low LDL-C
Diagnosis of familial hypobetalipoproteinemia and abetalipoproteinemia
Methodology
Measured, Liquid Selective Detergent
Note: This test is a measured LDL and is based on the triglyceride level. If the triglyceride level is >1,293 mg/dL, this test is invalid.
Clinical Information
Plasma lipoproteins are spherical particles containing varying amounts of cholesterol, triglycerides, phospholipids, and proteins. The phospholipid, free cholesterol, and protein constitute the outer surface of the lipoprotein particle, while the inner core contains mostly esterified cholesterol and triglycerides. These particles serve to solubilize and transport cholesterol and triglycerides in the bloodstream. The relative proportions of protein and lipid determine the density of these lipoproteins and provide a basis on which to begin their classification.1 These classes are: chylomicrons, very-low-density lipoprotein (VLDL), low-density lipoprotein (LDL), and high-density lipoprotein (HDL). Numerous clinical studies have shown that the different lipoprotein classes have very distinct and varied effects on coronary heart disease (CHD) risk.2-4The studies all point to LDL cholesterol as the key factor in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis and CHD,2-8 while HDL cholesterol has been observed to have a protective effect. Even within the normal range of total cholesterol concentrations, an increase in LDL cholesterol can occur with an associated increased risk for CHD.

The National Lipid Association and the National Cholesterol Education Program (NCEP) have set the following guidelines for lipids (total cholesterol, triglycerides, high-density lipoprotein [HDL] cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein [LDL], and non-HDL cholesterol) in adults 18 years old and older:
Optimal: <100 mg/dL
Near Optimal: 100-129 mg/dL
Borderline High: 130-159 mg/dL
High: 160-189 mg/dL
Very High: ≥ 190 mg/dL
The Expert Panel on Intergrated Guidelines for Cardiovascular Health and Risk Reduction in Children and Adolescents has set the following guidelines for lipids (total cholesterol, triglycerides, high-density lipoprotein [HDL] cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein [LDL], and non-HDL cholesterol) in children up to the age of 17:
Optimal: <100 mg/dL
Borderline High: 100-129 mg/dL
High: ≥ 130 mg/dL
