Additional Codes

Test Name in EPIC EPIC Test Code Mnemonic
BLOOD BANK DRAW & HOLD LAB8208 BBDRW

Test Alias

Blood Bank Draw & Hold, BBDRW

Useful For/Utility

Test is used to draw a sample that may be used for future Type and Screen testing, within the next three days, without needing additional venipuncture performed.
1) Outpatient oncology patients having their CBC periodically checked for Hgb and Plt values for potential transfusion at a certain threshold utilize this test. It increases convenience for the patient by limiting trips to the clinic, unnecessary venipunctures, unnecessary Type and Screen testing, unnecessary lab fees billed to the patient.
2) Emergency Room patients with a potential to require a transfusion in the next three days could benefit from this test being collected with other labs to limit another venipuncture.
This test is not indicated if there is no potential for a blood product transfusion within the next three days.

Test Algorithm

Testing is not performed unless a Type and Screen order is placed after the BBDRW collection.
