Test Alias
BB Special Ag, Antigen, paternal
Useful For/Utility
Blood Bank Special Antigen test is used to perform specific antigen testing for the below instances:
1) When a clinically significant maternal antibody is identified, it is recommended the father be tested for the corresponding antigen(s) to determne the fetal risk for hemolytic disease of the fetus and newborn.
2) Life Source testing for A1 antigen.
3) Darzalex (Daratumumab) Order Set – included to order genotype or phenotype, whichever is indicated by testing results.
Methodology
Manual
Test Algorithm
LifeSource group A and AB patients will require an A1 type be performed on a pretransfusion sample.
Clinical Information
Detection of the presence or absence of a requested antigen on human red blood cells. When a clinically significant maternal antibody has been identified, the liklihood of fetal involvement can be predicted by determining the genotype of the father. If the father does not possess the antigen, the fetus is not at risk. If the father is a heterzygote, there is a 50% chance that the fetus has inherited the antigen.
