Methodology
Real-Time Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR)
Specimen Requirements
Only 1 specimen per patient per 7 days will be accepted.
Only liquid stools will be accepted. Non-liquid stools will be rejected.
Submit only 1 of the following specimens:
Preferred:
Specimen Type: Human stool, unpreserved
Container/Tube: Clean Container
Specimen Volume: 1 g of stool (or approximately 1 Tablespoon)
Collection Instructions:
1. Collect stool in a clean container or transfer from bedpan or plastic wrap stretched over toilet bowl.
2. Label container with patient’s name (first and last),
date and actual time of collection, and type of specimen.
Additional Information:
1. Stool contaminated with urine or submitted in diaper is not acceptable.
2. Interfering substances: Inhibition may be observed in the presence of zinc oxide paste and Vagisil cream.

Limitations of this test:
This test detects, but does not differentiate, the NAP1 (Ribotype 027) strain from other toxigenic strains of C. diffcile.
The results from this test should be interpreted in conjunction with the patient's clinical information as well as other diagnostic procedures.
