Useful For/Utility

The monospecific IgG direct antiglobulin test is used primarily for the investigation of  hemolytic disease of the fetus and newborn.

Test Algorithm

Cord blood DAT should be performed with in 72 hours from collection. If testing is requested on a sample older than 72 hours, testing will be performed with results having a disclamer of potential false negative results due to testing a sample greater than 72 hours old.

Clinical Information

The direct antiglobulin test (DATGG) is performed on cord blood samples to detect IgG antibody coating the red blood cells. Maternal alloantibodies that cross the placenta and coat fetal cells are often associated wtih hemolytic disease of the newborn.

Additional Information:

1. Specimen must be labeled with the infants full name (last name, Boy/Girl A, mother's preferred name) and medical record number. The mother's name (first and last) and MRN can be present on the specimen additionally. Cord blood specimens received without the infants full name and medical record number will be rejected.

2. Cord blood is available for testing for 7 days post delivery.
