Useful For/Utility
Screening for gastrointestinal bleeding and colorectal cancer.
Methodology
The Hemosure® Accu-Reader® A100 is a qualitative, sandwich dye conjugate immunoassay and employs a unique combination of monoclonal and polyclonal antibodies to selectively identify hemoglobin in test samples with a high degree of sensitivity. As the test sample flows up through the absorbent device, the labeled antibody-dye conjugate binds to the hemoglobin in the specimen forming an antibody-antigen complex.
Clinical Information
The presence of fecal occult blood in the stool is associated with gastrointestinal disorders such as diverticulitis, polyps, and Crohn's disease, that may lead to colorectal cancer if not treated. Early diagnosis by fecal occult blood screening and treatment of these problems has been shown to significantly reduce mortality from colorectal cancer.
