Clinical Information
The presence of fecal occult blood in the stool is associated with gastrointestinal disorders such as diverticulitis, polyps, and Crohn's disease, that may lead to colorectal cancer if not treated. Early diagnosis by fecal occult blood screening and treatment of these problems has been shown to significantly reduce mortality from colorectal cancer.
Specimen Requirements
OC-Auto sampling bottle (light green cap)
Refer to Patient Personal Use Kit for materials and complete collection instructions.
Patient Preparation:
There are no dietary restrictions for this test.
Specimen Collection:
Specimen Type: Stool
Specimen Volume: 1 Sample probe
Collection Instructions:
1. Provide patient with kit and collection instructions.
2. Instruct patient to scrape surface of fecal specimen with sample probe so that entire grooved portion of sample probe is completely covered with fecal matter.
3. Specimen must be added to the sampling device within 4 hours of collection.
Additional Information:
1. Label specimen container with patient’s name, age, gender, date and time of collection.
2. Specimen may be returned via U.S. Postal Service.
3. Patients experiencing active hemorrhoids, or who are having a menstrual period should delay testing until bleeding ceases.

Specimen stability once specimen is added to collection vial:
Ambient for 15 days
Refrigerate for 30 days
*During winter months please advise patients to drop off their collection kits at an Essentia location instead of returning via the postal service.
