Useful For/Utility

The quantitative Kleihauer-Betke stain is used to detect a fetal bleed in a maternal patient when the fetal type is unknown, as in abdominal trauma. It is also indicated when an FMH screen is positive to determine additional RhIG dosing needs in a larger fetal maternal hemorrhage.

Kleihauer-Betke stain allows for the quantitation of fetal cells present in maternal peripheral blood.

Specimen Requirements

Volume: 1 6.0 mL  EDTA Pink Tube

Minimum Volume:  3.0mL

Tube type/anticoagulant:  6.0 mL EDTA Pink Tube/ or 3.0 mL EDTA Purple
