Testing for other rash illnesses, including syphilis, herpes simplex, and chickenpox if indicated, is recommended.

Specimen Requirements

Specimen collection:

Collect samples from more than one lesion, preferably from different locations on the body and/or from lesions with differing appearances

-Collect two swabs per each lesion

-Lesion crusts or scabs must be submitted with a swab from the same lesion

-Vigorously swab or brush lesion with two separate sterile dry nylon, polyester, or Dacron swabs

-Place two swabs from one lesion in one container; break off end of applicator of each swab into a 1.5mL or 2mL screw-capped tube with an O-ring (preferred) or place two swabs from one lesion in one sterile container

-Label container with collection site on the EPIC label

-Use separate containers for each set of same lesion swabs

-Refrigerate within 1 hour of collection

- "-Complete 1 General Infectious Disease Laboratory Submission Form per swab and submit with the swabs."

-Fill out form as completely as possible including the items that are not asterisk marked.

-Under the "OTHER" category- Fill in Source and Site

-Test Requested: Orthopoxvirus

Specimen Transport Temperature

 

Specimen Stability:

Dry swabs should be stored refrigerated within one hour of collection and shipped at refrigeration temperature.  

Specimens must be received within 7 days of collection or stored and shipped frozen.
