Specimen Requirements

Specimen Type: Plasma (preferred) or Serum
Container/Tube: Lithium Heparin Plasma (Light Green Top)
Preferred Specimen Volume: 1 mL
Minimum specimen volume: 0.5 mL
1. Hemolyzed specimen is not acceptable.
2. Remove plasma or serum from the clot, red blood cells, or separator gel if testing will be delayed more than 24 hours.

Preferred Specimen Volume: 1 mL
Minimum specimen volume: 0.15 mL
1. Hemolyzed specimen is not acceptable.
2. If patient is on nesiritide (Natrecor), wait 5 half-lives (2 hour) after infusion before drawing specimen.
3. Testing must be completed within 2 hours of phlebotomy.
4. If there is a delay in testing, the EDTA whole blood can be stored for up to 2 days at 2-8° C.
