Useful For/Utility

Panel includes Type and Screen and Red Blood Cell order that defaults to prepare and transfuse 2 units with an indication of emergent blood transfusion. A Phsyician or Advanced Practice Clinician must sign an emergent release form stating the risk of delay outweighs the increased risks associated. This form must be returned to the Laboratory and will be included in the patients EMR.

Test Algorithm

If two blood types have not been previously performed at Essentia Health, a second ABO/Rh will be reflexed. This is only done once and is at no charge to the patient. Antibody Identification will be reflexed for positive antibody screen testing.

 Two red cell components may be cross matched for inpatients type and screen who have a positive antibody screen and subsequent antibody.    

Clinical Information

Type O Red Blood Cells are prepared based on age and gender known at the time of emergent event. Rh positive or Rh negative units will be sent, labeled as uncrossmatched and with an accompanying Emergency Release form.
