Specimen Requirements

Slides and whole blood are required.

 

Slides must be made within 8 hours of draw.

 

Specimen Type: Whole blood

Container/Tube: Lavender top (EDTA)

Specimen Volume: 1 mL

Specimen Minimum Volume: 0.5 mL

Additional Information:

1. Fingerstick specimen is acceptable.

2. Regional and Neighborhood sites: Send remaining EDTA specimen (refrigerated), printout from hematology analyzer, and 1 unstained blood smears.

Specimen Volume: 1 smear

Collection Instructions: Prepare1 thin blood smear, using only clean, grease-free slides. Slides, with a “feathered edge,” should be no more than a single cell thick. Allow smears to thoroughly air dry. Label slides with 2 accurate patient identifiers. Handwrite slide labels. Do not use stickers as patient identifiers/labels on slides. Do not stain slides.
